What Is a Cranial Prosthesis?

A cranial prosthesis (also known as a cranial hair prosthesis or medical wig) is a custom-fitted hair replacement system designed specifically for individuals experiencing medical hair loss. Unlike a fashion wig, a cranial prosthesis is built around the unique shape of your scalp, your comfort needs and the sensitivity that often accompanies treatment.
Common reasons clients seek a cranial prosthesis include chemotherapy, radiation, alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, alopecia universalis, pediatric alopecia, trichotillomania, telogen effluvium (stress-related hair loss) and other medical conditions. Many insurance providers reimburse part or all of the cost when prescribed by a physician.
